SALT University College, formerly SALT Institute, was founded in 2003 but its genesis dates to 1997. During that year’s edition of the annual continental prayer conference of the Intercessors for Africa (IFA), held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, one of the intercessors had a revelation that “Africa faced challenges that prayer alone by itself could not solve”. The revelation further exposed the fact that African nations did not have good, proper foundation (the foundations were not laid on scriptures); secondly, the nations did not have servant leaders in their governments; thirdly, leaders in the nations did not know how to apply biblical principles to leadership. To tackle these challenges, IFA was directed to equip leaders who will bring about the desired transformation in the continent.

SALT University College is therefore a response to that call. SALT is an acronym that stands for Sundoulos (Servanthood) Advanced Leadership Training. The institute is committed to training and developing servant leaders for business and public life in Africa as well as the global marketplace.

Existing previously as a Christian leadership-training centre, the institution obtained accreditation in May 2018 from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to operate as a private tertiary institution. In December 2023, the institution again received approval to transition from SALT Institute to SALT University College.
